How much alcohol is in one drink?

A typical alcoholic beverage contains a tad more then one-half ounce of pure ethanol alcohol per serving. For wine, a single serving is around five ounces. 12 ounces of beer deliver the same amount of alcohol as an eight-ounce serving of malt liquor. In the case of distilled spirits, a 1 ½ ounce shot glass contains roughly the same amount of alcohol as the aforementioned drinks. Many people who check into inpatient alcohol treatment in Orange County started out drinking moderately but progressed to binge drinking over time.

Are heavy drinking and binge drinking the same thing?

Not exactly. According to the Center for Disease Control, heavy drinking is consuming eight or more alcoholic drinks per week for a woman and 15 weekly drinks for a man. The most common form of over-drinking is binge drinking which consists of four or more drinks in a single session for a female, and consuming five or more drinks per session for a male. Moderate drinking, says the CDC, is one drink per day for a woman and two daily drinks for a man. Because males are typically larger than females, they tend to be able to consume slightly more alcohol while achieving similar effects. If you think you may be drinking too much, private alcohol treatment in Orange County can help you regain control of your life.

What are the short-term health risks of drinking to excess?

Some of the most dangerous aspects of drinking in the short term involve accidents. Motor vehicle mishaps, falls, burns, electrocution, and drowning are listed by the CDC as the most likely injurious outcomes of moderate to heavy drinking. Violence between partners is also common when drinking, as are risky sexual behaviors such as unprotected intercourse or intercourse with strangers. If a person over-drinks, the danger of alcohol poisoning comes into play, and it can be a medical emergency. If left untreated, alcohol poisoning can easily lead to death.

What are the long-term health risks of drinking?

When people drink too much alcohol for an extended period of time, they exponentially increase their risk of heart disease, liver disease, high blood pressure, and digestive troubles. Certain cancers, including cancer of the mouth, esophagus, colon, and liver also increase in a big way when people over-indulge in alcohol. Social problems, work problems, and mental health issues are also common occurrences among persons who drink heavily for a long time, explains the Center for Disease Control.
